Learning English Through Daily Life (Guest Post by Thilini Hansika)
Many people think learning English only happens in classrooms. But I believe we can learn English every single day in our homes, schools, and even while walking on the street. English is all around us if we pay attention. I started improving my English not only from lessons but also from small things in my daily life.
Every morning, I read signboards, product labels, and advertisements written in English. This helped me learn spelling and new words easily. I also changed my mobile phone language to English, so I could see common phrases like “settings,” “download,” and “share.” When I watch YouTube videos or listen to English news, I try to repeat some sentences to practice pronunciation. These small actions helped me a lot.
I also speak English with my friends, even if we make mistakes. We challenge each other to talk only in English for 10 minutes a day. Sometimes we laugh at our funny sentences, but we keep trying. I learned that practice is more important than perfection. Slowly, I started to think in English instead of translating from my mother tongue.
Learning English through daily life made me more confident. Now, when I meet new people or talk to tourists, I can communicate better. It’s amazing how much we can learn when we use English naturally every day.
English is used in many parts of daily life in Sri Lanka — on signboards, news, social media, and workplaces. It connects us with global culture and helps us understand the modern world better.

This guest post was written by my classmate who believes English can be learned anywhere. We discussed how she practices every day without books — by reading labels, watching videos, and talking with friends. I helped her organize the steps and create a colorful infographic using Canva. Writing this article reminded us that English learning is not only in the classroom — it’s a daily habit that can make life easier and more fun.
