Learning English Through Daily Life (Guest Post by Thilini Hansika)

Image
Many people think learning English only happens in classrooms. But I believe we can learn English every single day  in our homes, schools, and even while walking on the street. English is all around us if we pay attention. I started improving my English not only from lessons but also from small things in my daily life. Every morning, I read signboards, product labels, and advertisements written in English. This helped me learn spelling and new words easily. I also changed my mobile phone language to English, so I could see common phrases like “settings,” “download,” and “share.” When I watch YouTube videos or listen to English news, I try to repeat some sentences to practice pronunciation. These small actions helped me a lot. I also speak English with my friends, even if we make mistakes. We challenge each other to talk only in English for 10 minutes a day. Sometimes we laugh at our funny sentences, but we keep trying. I learned that practice is more important than perfection. Slow...

Speaking English with Tourists in Sri Lanka (Guest Post by Tharindu Sasanka)

Image
One of the most exciting experiences in my English-learning journey was speaking with tourists who visited Sri Lanka. I met them during a school trip to Galle Fort. They were from different countries such as the UK, Australia, and Japan. At first, I was a little shy because I was afraid I might say something wrong. But they smiled kindly, which gave me the courage to start a conversation. I began with a simple greeting, “Hello! Welcome to Sri Lanka!” They replied happily, and soon we started talking about our country’s food, beaches, and culture. I realized that even though my English wasn’t perfect, they understood me. That moment gave me so much confidence. I learned that communication is not just about grammar  it’s about expressing yourself clearly and politely. The tourists also shared stories about their countries. One woman told me about her favorite Sri Lankan dish, kottu roti! I felt proud to talk about our traditions and show them how friendly Sri Lankan people are. After...

Learning English Through Social Media (GUEST POST_By Jalani Piyumika)

Image
Learning English Through Social Media Today, almost everyone uses social media  Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube. But did you know that these platforms can also help you learn English? That’s how I started improving my language skills.  I realized that English is everywhere online, and if we use it wisely, it becomes a great learning tool. When I scroll through my social media, I follow English-learning pages, motivational accounts, and travel vloggers. They use simple and real-life English that helps me understand how people speak naturally.  I also watch short English videos with subtitles to learn pronunciation and sentence patterns. Sometimes, I write comments in English or reply to international posts  it’s a fun way to practice writing! Social media has also introduced me to different cultures. For example, I watch cooking videos from other countries, and through them, I learn new food words and traditions.  I even joined an online English-speaki...

Learning English Through Music

Image
Learning English doesn’t always have to be serious or boring. For me, one of the best ways to learn is through music. English songs have helped me improve my pronunciation, vocabulary, and listening skills in a fun way. When I listen to songs, I don’t feel like I’m studying  I feel relaxed and happy. At first, I started by listening to slow songs so I could understand the lyrics easily. I used to pause and replay lines to catch the correct pronunciation. Later, I began to write down new words and look up their meanings. Through this method, I learned everyday phrases and expressions that people use in real conversations. For example, songs like “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran and “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars taught me how to express love, friendship, and emotions in English. Singing along also helped me with my accent and rhythm. I practiced the words again and again until I could sing smoothly. I noticed that my speaking became clearer and more natural. Music also connected me to different...

The Power of Reading English Novels

Image
Reading English novels has always been one of the best ways to improve my language skills. When I open a book, I don’t just read words — I enter another world. I see new places, meet different people, and feel their emotions. Every story teaches me something new about language and life. At first, I found English novels difficult because there were many new words. But I didn’t give up. I started with short and simple books like The Secret Garden and Charlotte’s Web. Later, I moved to longer novels such as Harry Potter and The Alchemist. Reading slowly helped me understand grammar, sentence patterns, and new expressions. When I saw the same words again and again, I learned them naturally without memorizing. Novels also improved my imagination and writing skills. They showed me how writers describe feelings, weather, and situations in beautiful ways. I started to use some of those expressions in my own writing. Reading also made me more patient and focused. Sometimes, I even imagined myse...

The Turning Point – My Experience at SLIATE

Image
One of the turning points in my English-learning journey was when I joined the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education (SLIATE). Before that, I had studied English mainly through textbooks, grammar exercises, and written tests. But at SLIATE, everything felt different. The environment encouraged communication, creativity, and teamwork. For the first time, English became a living, breathing language  not just something printed on a page. In our classes, we practiced speaking through role plays, debates, and discussions. At first, I was quite nervous. I often worried about making pronunciation mistakes or forgetting my lines. But my lecturers and classmates were always supportive. They reminded me that confidence grows through practice.  Gradually, I began to enjoy every presentation. Each session helped me express myself more clearly and fearlessly. Another unforgettable experience was micro-teaching.  Standing in front of my peers and teaching an English l...

Watching Korean Dramas with English Subtitles

Image
one of my favorite Korean drama " Goblin" One of the most enjoyable ways I have improved my English is by watching Korean dramas with English subtitles. It might sound unusual, but it has truly helped me become more confident in listening, reading, and understanding sentence flow. When I first started watching, I focused mainly on the story and characters. But soon, I realized that every line of dialogue was an opportunity to learn something new. Each episode introduced me to different expressions, idioms, and emotions. For example, I learned how people say “Don’t give up!” or “Take your time!” in natural English conversations. Reading the subtitles helped me recognize sentence patterns and improve my reading speed. Sometimes, I paused the video to repeat phrases or write down interesting vocabulary. I even noticed how intonation and emotions are expressed differently in English compared to Korean  it was like watching a language come alive. Over time, I began to understand E...
