My Personal journey in learning English

Learning English has made my life wonderful, and it is a rewarding journey.   I still remember my first English lesson in primary school, where I could only say “My name is…” with a shy smile. But as I grew older, I realized that learning a language is not only about grammar and vocabulary it is about communication, culture, and confidence. At that time, I thought English was a secret language that only clever people could speak.

But back then, I tried to read every English word I came across, wherever I could find it. My grandmother still remembers this. From this, I improved my English knowledge little by little. I felt like I had a superpower compared to the other students.

When I was in primary school, I started reading the English on shop boards.  When I entered secondary school, I began to see English everywhere—on television, in music, books .I started watching English cartoons with subtitles and writing down new words. I also watched Korean dramas with English subtitles because it was my hobby. Slowly, those words became part of my own expressions. Reading storybooks helped me understand how emotions.

When I was in my academic studies at the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technology, we practiced speaking English through role plays, debates, and presentations. At first, I felt nervous and shy, but my friends encouraged me to participate. We also did micro teaching sessions, which gave me a chance to teach small lessons to my peers. These experiences helped me build confidence and shaped my personality as an English teacher.

Through this journey, I learned patience, resilience, and the joy of expressing myself in a new language. I hope my story inspires others to embrace their own language-learning journey and remember that every small step counts.

Learning English Expands My Knowledge. Watching Korean dramas with English subtitles helped me understand both languages. English acts as a bridge for different communities to share their ideas emotions and stories.

I wrote this post after thinking about how far I’ve come since my first English lesson. I looked through my old schoolbooks and photos, which brought back memories of how I learned through reading, watching, and speaking. Writing this reflection helped me realize how much confidence I’ve gained and how English has shaped not just my language, but my personality.
